South Village in Manhattan in New York County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
MacDougal-Sullivan Gardens Historic District
Inscription.
This block is a pioneering effort at urban renewal made in the early 1920s by William Slone Coffin, heir to the W&J Sloane Furniture Company. To attract middle-class professionals, he renovated brick row houses built in the 1840s and 1850s and created a private community garden with low-walled plots opening into a central mall enclosed by their houses.
