Through the friendship and influence of Amos Draper, James McMaster, a soldier of General Sullivan's army obtained by treaty with the Indians in June, 1786 eighteen square miles of land north of the Susquehanna River and east of Owego Creek known as McMaster’s half township which included the site of the village of Owego, founded in 1787
