Bert Jones completed 12-of-18 passes for 227 yards and three second half touchdowns as 10th-ranked LSU overcame a slow start to beat 17th-ranked. Iowa State, 33-15, in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. LSU kicked a pair of first quarter field goals to lead 6-o before the Cyclones got a field goal in the second quarter to pull to within 6-3 at halftime. Up 19-15 after a Cyclone TD early in the fourth quarter, Jones connected with Jay Michaelson on a 6-yard Score to put the Tigers up 26-15. Jones put the game out of reach at 33-15 with a 6-yard run with 3:05 left in the contest. Andy Hamilton caught six passes for 165 yards and a TD, while Michaelson kicked two field goals and scored a TD for the Tigers as LSU wrapped up the season with a 9-3 mark.
