The United States government viewed the Vietnam war as a way to prevent the spread of communism in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. At the peak of the war, 1969, there were more than 500,000 American soldiers involved. President Nixon ordered the withdrawal of American forces in 1973. In 1975, the last American troops withdrew from Vietnam.
