Although Europe had been at war since September 1, 1939 the United States did not become involved until December 7, 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii and several other locations in what would become known as the Pacific Theater of WWII. December 8, 1941, President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Suddenly America was drawn into a global war. Allied with Australia, a massive cooperative effort between governments, industries and the populations began to supply soldiers, equipment and materiel needed to win the war. The fighting continued in the Pacific until shortly after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan: Hiroshima - August 6, 1945, and Nagasaki - August 9, 1945. Japan unconditionally surrendered shortly after officially ending WWII on September 2, 1945.
