Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Germany allied with Italy and Japan to declare war on the United States sending the U.S. into a war on two fronts. The invasion of Europe began June 6, 1944, with the landing of tens of thousands of soldiers from the United States, France and Great Britain along the beaches of Normandy, France. The big four, United States, Great Britain, France, and Russia, joined with military forces of other smaller European nations in a two prong attack that forced the surrender of Germany on May 8, 1945. This date is officially known as Victory in Europe day, however, WWII would not officially end until fighting in the Pacific Theater ended on September 2, 1945.
