Rondell Mealey electrified a frigid Independence Bowl crowd with a 222-yard rushing performance to pace LSU to a convincing 27-9 win over Notre Dame, avenging a loss to the Irish during the regular season. Mealey, subbing for starter Kevin Faulk who was injured early in the game, didn't miss a beat in place of the LSU All-American. The teams exchanged field goals early before the LSU touchdown surge began. Notre Dame led 6-3 at halftime before the Tigers tied the game at 6-6 on à Wade Richey field goal in the third quarter. LSU took the lead for good when Herb Tyler hit Abram Booty with a 12-yard scoring strike for a 13-6 Tiger lead. Notre Dame got to within 13-9 early in the fourth quarter before Mealey scored on runs of two and one yard to send LSU to victory before a national audience on ESPN. LSU finished the year with a 9-3 mark.

Erected by LSU Brian, Lisa, Lawton, Madison McLemore.
