Rohan Davey passed for a Sugar Bowl record 444 yards and Domanick Davis scored a Sugar Bowl record four rushing TDs, including three in the first half, as LSU overpowered seventh-ranked Illinois, 47-34 in New Orleans. The win marked LSU's first New Year's Day bowl victory since beating Wyoming in the 1968 Sugar Bowl. LSU built a 20-0 lead just 20 minutes into the contest and led 34-7 at halftime. Illinois got to within 41-28 in the fourth quarter, but Davis' 4-yard run with 8:39 left put the game out of reach. LSU set Sugar Bowl records for total offense (595) and points in a half (34), while Josh Reed set Sugar Bowl marks for receptions (14) and receiving yards (239) as LSU finished the with a 10-3 record.
