| | LSU 21, Oklahoma 14 | |
LSU's suffocating defense limited the nation's top scoring offense and Heisman Trophy winner Jason White to only 154 yards as the Tigers claimed their second national title in football with a 21-14 win over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Running back Justin Vincent earned MVP honors for the game, rushing for 117 yards and one touchdown in leading the Tigers to the victory. LSU never trailed in the contest, taking a 7-0 lead on a 24-yard run by Skyler Green and then leading 14-7 at halftime following an 18-yard run by Vincent. LSU struck again early in the second half when Marcus Spears returned an interception 20 yards for a TD just 47 seconds into the third quarter, giving the Tigers a 21-7 advantage. The Sooners got to within 21-14 with 11 minutes to go before LSU's defense held Oklahoma at bay on its final three possessions securing the school's first national title in football since 1958.
