1. New Glasgow Town Bell Marker
Inscription. This bell, belonging to the Town of New Glasgow, was refurbished and a bell tower was constructed as part of the New Glasgow Downtown Revitalization Project - Recreating the Experience, in 2009.

The bell was originally manufactured and supplied by Steven P. Struthers Limited of Eastvale Place, Klevinhaugh, Glasgow, Scotland. It was purchased by the town and mounted on the Post Office-Customs House in 1901 (which has been the Town Hall since 1962) for fifty years. It was New Glasgow’s fire alarm. The townspeople were notified of fire by the bell ringing in response to a signal from one of the electric outdoor call boxes located throughout the town. The bell tolled time signals at 8:00 AM and noon, 9:00 PM children’s curfew and after 1936 for a decade, rang the town clock hours. The cost of the bell was $3,000. It was guaranteed for two years. The bell is 40 inches in diameter and 34 inches in height and weighs about 1500 pounds, similar in size to the Liberty Bell, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Town Council of 1985 had the bell mounted and displayed on Archimedes Street.

It was re-dedicated and unveiled by

Editor’s want-list for this marker. Three photos, like No.3, showing a closeup of the bell from the other three sides of the pavilion, sharp enough that the inscription in the shoulder band of the bell is readable. • Can you help?
