1. The Benjamin Hotel Marker
Inscription.
Originally built in 1926-27 as the Beverly Hotel, this 25-story edifice is one of New York City’s premiere hotels constructed along the noted “Hotel Alley” stretch of Lexington Avenue. Its construction followed the opening of the famed Grand Central Terminal and the Lexington Avenue IRT subway line. Designed by Emery Roth as an apartment hotel, it featured many luxury amenities, including outdoor terraces and roof gardens. The facades are richly ornamented with stylized Romanesque motifs and incorporate whimsical details such as pelican and owl sculptures. In addition to warrior-head corbels, the hotel’s distinct profile made it a favorite subject for American artists of the 1920s, including Georgia O’Keefe, Alfred Stieglitz, and Charles Sheeler.

Erected 2017 by New York Landmark Preservation Foundation.
