1. Wayside Inn / Posada Wayside Marker
Inscription.
George Severson (1766-1813), a grandson of Jurrian Severson, one of the area's first settlers, built the Wayside Inn ca. 1785 along the wagon track that is now Main Street. The site of the Inn was approximately half way between the farms of Schoharie and the Albany markets, and it became an essential stagecoach stop. Large stables and barns behind the Inn provided respite for the horse teams. The area's first post office, West Guilderland, opened at the Inn 24 December 1829. Isolated by the construction of the Schoharie Plank Road, a mile east in 1849, the Inn eventually closed, as traffic was diverted away from its front door. The Inn became a private residence, and succumbed to progress in 1956 when it was demolished and replaced by a gas station.
