Inscription.

(English translation:) In the year of Richard Wagner's birth, the Bayreuth poet Jean Paul wrote prophetically in his foreward to E.T.A. Hoffman's Fantasy Pieces in Callot's Manner, "Until now, the Sun God has always thrown the gift of lyrics to the left and the gift of melody to the right, so far apart from each other that up to this moment we have be waiting for the man who would finally unite them to deliver a true opera." This man should be known as Richard Wagner.

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) went down in history not only as a brilliant poet. He also merited recognition as a composer of several

operas: Undine and Aurora are among the core pieces of the Romantic Opera genre. Hoffmann was, above all, a music and opera theorist and an author of horror stories for the young Wagner, who had enthusiastically read the story of Ritter Gluck. Several stories by the poet, among other sources, inspired Wagner for Tannhäuser and the Meistersingern von Nürnberg: Der Kampf der Sänger and Meister Martin der Küfner und seine Gesellen; Wagner's draft for Die Bergwerke zu Falun, inspired by Hoffman, remained uncomposed. Wagner took the motifs of magic, the night, and the collision of reality and fantasy, all the way up to the magic garden of Parsifal, from the fantasy pieces of the poet composer E. T. A. Hoffmann. Wagner's idea of an ideal opera in the spirit of romantic art poetry would not have been possible without Hoffmann's notions of a romantic opera. Hoffmann, as did Wagner later, criticized the commercial aspect of opera; Wagner further developed Hoffmann's approach and in the Artwork of the Future (1850) he proposed the vision of a musical drama that united both art and society.
