1. WSM Marker Reverse
Inscription. This station began operation October 5, 1932, the anniversary of WSM's founding in 1925 by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company of Nashville. WSM-AM operates on a clear channel frequency of 650 kilohertz with power of 50,000 watts. It originated the Grand Ole Opry in 1925 and has continued to broadcast this world famous program on a regular basis. The unique tower, 878 feet high, was the tallest radio tower in the United States at the time of its erection. It sits on a large porcelain insulator and is held vertical by eight insulated steel cables.

When erected in 1932, the tower was the tallest in the United States and second in height only to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
