First Houses
The nation’s first public housing project. On November 21, 1934 the city began its battle against the slums when the newly-formed New York City Housing Authority obtained the right to demolish and rebuild the tenements on this site. These buildings, First Houses, remain a fitting monument to the beginning of the public housing program in the United States of America.
