S. Clement's parish was founded in 1855. The church, designed by John Notman, was completed in 1859.
During the 1870's, S. Clement's became one of the first Anglo-Catholic parishes in Philadelphia. From 1876 to 1891 the Cowley Fathers, a religious order, took charge of the parish. The Cowleys were responsible for organizing several community social services, including S. Clement's Hospital, once located at Cherry and Lambert Streets.
At the turn of the century the present Clergy House and Parish House designed by Horace W. Sellers, were added to the complex. In 1908 the sanctuary was enlarged to include the present high altar and reredos with Frederic Wilson's painting of "Christ Reigning from the Cross". The wrought iron gates to the Lady Chapel and choir are the works of Philadelphia artist, Samuel Yellin. The stained glass windows installed in 1941 were designed by Charles Connick and made in Boston.
Erected by St. Clement's Episcopal Church.
