National hero of the Philippines
His writings, "Noli Me Tangere" (Touch Me Not) and "El Filibusterismo" (The Social Cancer), which dramatized the Spanish colonial oppression of the Filipinos, which resulted in Independence of the Philippines on
June 12, 1898
