Inscription.
No. 48 is one of three handsome Anglo-Italianate houses, Nos. 48-52, built in 1854 for Frederick P. James, of the Wall Street firm, F.P. James & Co. The four-story houses are smooth-stuccoed to simulate brownstone with front door enframements, including a pair of Corinthian columns, which are unique in Greenwich Village. The houses are crowned by individual cornices which may have been remodeled at a later date thus making them discontinuous as we see them today.
