Plantation of Jacques Philippe Villere
(1761-1830)
First native-born Louisianan to serve as governor of Louisiana (1816-1820); Served as major-general commanding the 1st Division of Louisiana Militia during the Battle of New Orleans; British forces reached Mississippi River at Villere Plantation December 23, 1814, and established their headquarters in main house of the Villere Plantation. Villere retired to this plantation known as Conseil where he successfully cultivated sugar until his death.
