1. Plane No. 4-Allegheny Portage Railroad Marker
Inscription.  This Monument marks the site of the Hitching Shed
- at the base of Plane No. 4 of the APRR, in the settlement of "Foot of Four.” -

Inclined Plane No. 4 was constructed - circa 1833 - by manipulating the terrain to make a navigable path across the mountains.
The lower section of the plane from the Hitching Shed to the "Cut” was built up with fill hewn from the rocky mountainside leaving the upper track bed that led to the Engine House on level 5.
Inclined Plane No. 4 was originally 2,194 feet long and overcame an elevation of 187.86 feet.

The Ten Planes of the Allegheny Portage Railroad - four of which (Nos. 2 - 3 - 4 - 5) were in the Original Washington Township - were links in a chain that joined Our Community with the fortune of the rest of the world.
