Cross Keys. . Laban Hartley, Jr. built a stone house here ca. 1818 and operated a tavern for which this community was named. Mt. Pisgah, located 1/2 mile southwest, was used as a reference point when surveyors created the 1783 Military Reservation line, which established the southern North Carolina land grant boundary. Pull Tight Hill is the highest point in the county, rising 1,256 feet above sea level. Two churches, Mt. Zion Methodist U.S.A. (1869-1994) and Cross Keys Baptist, est. 1954, are area landmarks. Choctaw School operated from 1871 to 1946. Joe D. Trice opened a store at this crossroads in 1910. Other early families include Anderson, Bigger, Crafton, Creswell, Giles, Hargrove, Henderson, Irvin, McCall, Skinner, and Walton.
