1. John P. Bowman Marker
Inscription.
Bowman came to Stony Creek in January 1852, a new and sparsely settled area. He purchased an uncompleted tannery, a sawmill, three houses and 6,000 acres of forest. With hard work and determination he soon had a capacity of forty thousand sides of leather per year.

The sole leather from the Stony Creek Tannery came to have a reputation and none better was to be had in market.

Additions to the Tannery were bark sheds, storage buildings, and a carpenter and repair shop. Mr. Bowman built a grand residence complete with a stable of fine horses, carriage house and a prestigious office.

He also built a boarding house for twenty-five men and houses for sixteen of his tannery workers and families.

The success of Mr. Bowman is what many people believe made this place.

Erected 1999 by Town of Stony Creek.
