First Mayor of Grambling
Bennie T. Woodard began his twenty-four year tenure as Grambling's first mayor in September 1953. Under his leadership Grambling achieved Village then Town status eventually, the status of the first incorporated African American municipality in Louisiana. He scaled the heights of many difficult obstacles to give leadership to the citizens of Grambling. He fought valiantly to strengthen the medical and economic resources of the community. In the greater Grambling area he served on the Lincoln Parish Police Jury as well as the Board of Law Enforcement Council for Northwest Louisiana, Incorporated.
