Rexton in Five Rivers, New Brunswick — The Atlantic Provinces (North America)
Saint John's the Evangelist Anglican Church
Built in 1884 on land given by the Brait family, its construction was under the direction of the community's first Anglican families, the Forsters and the Palmers. The church was consecrated on September 3rd of that year by Bishop Tully Kingdon, coadjutor and commissary of the renowned Bishop John Medley. St. John's the Evangelist became part of the parish formed that year which also included St. Lawrence's in Buctouche, and St. Mary's and the Chapel of Ease, both in Richibucto. Parish records indicate baptisms of Rexton (Kingston) parishioners as early as 1858.
St. John's has been served by a great number of ministers over the years, most of whom were here for only a short time. The longest pastorate was that of Rev. Alwyn E. Dickinson, lasting twenty-six years from 1930 to 1956. "Mr. D." died in 1960 and is buried in the cemetery associated with this church, the Anglican / United Cemetery in Richibucto.
The stained glass windows were installed here after being removed from St. Mary's Church when that building was razed in the 1960's. The altar, altar rail, lectern and prayer desk were crafted by David Thompson, father of the founder of what is today Thompson's Funeral Home.
