Inscription. One of the most familiar inhabitants of the Park's woodlands is the Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus). This small mammal constructs an elaborate underground burrow consisting of several chambers connected by a series of tunnels. As it scampers about the forest floor, it keeps a wary eye for predators, which include hawks, foxes, dogs, and cats. At the first sign of danger, it lets out a loud chirp to warn other chipmunks and darts into its burrow. During the warmer months, chipmunks can be seen collecting seeds, nuts, and berries and stuffing them into their cheek pouches, which can greatly expand in size. These foodstuffs are saved for snacks when chipmunks occasionally wake from their winter hibernation.
