Inscription. James A. Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was nominated in this building on August 23, 1859, for joint senator representing Portage and Summit Counties. This was the begining of his political career. The nominating convention was composed of delegates from the two counties.
 
Erected 1943 by The Rotary Club of Kent.
