1. Frank Hoyse Sobey, OC Marker

Inscription. Best known as the entrepreneur who grew his father’s small meat delivery business into a regional grocery powerhouse that has since expanded to serve millions of Canadians country-wide, Frank H. Sobey was, first and foremost, a proud Nova Scotian who practiced his belief in giving back to his community and Province.

From 1937 until 1959, Frank Sobey served as Mayor of Stellarton, bringing the Town into the 20th century by overseeing the modernization of its critical infrastructure. In 1957 he was asked by Premier Robert Stanfield to lead Industrial Estates Limited, a crown corporation set up to attract much needed industry to the province. For twelve years, as a “dollar-a-year man,” he helped bring dozens of companies, millions of investment dollars and thousands of jobs to Nova Scotia.

Among many honours recognizing his contributions to business and his community, Frank Sobey was inducted to both the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame, and in 1985 was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
