In 1885, on this site, Alex Sauriol opened a general store in his house. In 1920, as economic development increased, Joseph Robert bought the business and replaced it with a new building built of red cement blocks. This was quite an innovation for the times. In the fifties the general store became a self-service store. Another first! The merchant no longer weighed your sugar at the counter, one would pick up a bag or other commodities in the aisles as we do today. It was a major revolution in consumer habits!

To meet the increasing and varied demands of the community the developer opened a funeral parlor in the back of the store accompanied by an ambulance and embalming service.

In the early sixties the east portion of store was constructed to house a IGA franchise while the rest of the building
