This building is a testimony of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa known otherwise as the Grey Nuns of the Cross. The history of this building is dotted with a series of nearly diabolical fires which fortunately did not discourage the Grey Nuns.

1867 — Construction of the first convent. Seigneur Papineau welcomed and supported the initiative of the religious order although there was a group of citizens who were against it. The first convent was destroyed by a fire in 1880. It was a total loss.

1881 — Construction of the second convent

1913 — The "Great Fire" of Montebello destroyed the second convent. It was rebuilt in 1914!

1920 — Once again a fire destroyed the convent. The institution seems to have been haunted by bad luck concerning fires. The religious group decided to build a new one. The priest Chamberland

acted like a master builder. He bought a machine to make blocks of cement with which he used to erect the new building. The total work cost was $50,000.

The building became a regional school of domestic science between 1920 and 1951. It became a "Family Institution" in 1965 when the minister Paul Gérin-Lajoie put in place a series of reforms for school institutions. There was no longer a need for such institutions.

The building was occupied by the Grey Nuns after this reform, until it was turned into a residence for autonomous individuals.
