English:
Montebello became a municipality on the 29th of August 1878. Charles Major was then named mayor of the village and Jeremie Taillefer, was treasury secretary. Henri Bourassa, founder of the newspaper "Le Devoir", was mayor from 1889 to 1894. He was 22 when he came into office.

In 1934 the municipal council, governed by the mayor J.G. Robert decided to build a town hall in relation to the growing needs of the village of Montebello. The plans presented by the architect Lucien Leblanc were accepted at an estimated cost of $10,000.

Until the sixties, the town hall had a prison cell made of cement blocks. This served to calm down certain individuals who had crossed the boundaries of what was socially acceptable in the community. There is no register of names of users of this prison.

The interior of the building was renovated in 2005, by plans by architect Pierre Tabet. In the council chamber, you can admire a fresco which represents the Papineau Mansion. The artist is unfortunately unknown. The restoration of the painting however is the work of Lucille Grenier.
