The blacksmith Louis-Dominnique Fortin and his wife built the first house on this lot in 1854. Built according to the standards of the times, rudimentary but solid.

The first house owned by the then famous entrepreneur Nelson Chénier was destroyed during the “Great Fire” of 1913. Subsequently to this tragic event Mr. Chénier went bankrupt and the land was sold by the sheriff. Mgr Michel Chamberland the local priest bought the land in 1914, and built a new house in 1917. Having lived through the disastrous experience of the “Great Fire” he wished to protect

buildings against fire hazards so he acquired a cement molding machine to imitate a rock construction. One can still see numerous houses in the village using this type of cement block construction.

In 1934 the house is occupied by a high fashion clothing store “Vêtements J. N. Daoust Clothing” specializing in made to measure suits. To better serve the clientele, the storefront with its large windows was added at this time. Mr. Daoust was mayor of Montebello from 1960 to 1971. In 1984 Dolorès Demers and Francois Dufour bought the house to establish a bakery. Famous for its olive and cheese bread, this was also where you would buy fine products such as capers, anchovies, fine herbs and exotic spices, rare at the time in the region.

Until recently, the building was used as a Bed and Breakfast in association with a gift and souvenir boutique. The rest of the building has kept its 19th century allure.
