Claypool-Fowler Mansion
and Fowler Gardens
In 1895, banker, hotelier, railroad builder and real estate developer Edward Fay Claypool (1832-1911) of Indianapolis built what was described as "a magnificent Moorish structure.” In 1901, the home was sold to millionaire Eldridge M. Fowler (1833-1904), brother-in-law of Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the reaper.
Eldridge Fowler died In 1904. In 1915, his widow Margaret commissioned landscape designer Paul J. Howard to construct a "garden pavillion” east of the home, which featured a tempietto and fountains that remain here today as the Fowler Gardens.
In 1922, Mrs. Fowler had well-known architect Myron Hunt substantially remodel the home, and its original appearance was completely altered. The Claypool-Fowler Mansion was eventually extensively remodeled to become the library for Ambassador College, The building had been so significantly altered that it no longer retained its historic significance and was razed in 2012.
Erected 2018.
