He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946. Was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for action during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
A respected American League umpire for 25 years. He umpired 5 World Series, 5 All Star games and 3 American League Championship Series. He served as an assistant supervisor of American League umpires from 1979 through 1981.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. on July 25, 1999.
