1. North Wood United Methodist Church Marker
Inscription. In 1908 a group of Christian believers met in the Fifth Ward School on the west side of the 1100 block of North Wood Avenue for Sunday School and worship. After land was donated at this site, a frame church was built in 1909 and it became one of the first churches in the North Florence area. The building included a bell tower and a bell for calling all to Sunday services. Although the church was built a block west of Wood Avenue, the name North Wood is a reminder of the original meeting place. The present sanctuary was dedicated on June 30, 1957. A magnificent twenty-six rank, three manual pipe organ with 1,559 pipes was installed and first used in the service in March 1967.
