Inscription. Nicolas Murray Butler (1931). . Nicolas Murray Butler, educator and diplomat, was president of Columbia University for 43 years. As an educator, he made great changes to teacher education, leading to better public schools. He was honored for his work with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Butler was committed to upholding international law and was a strong believer in the Kellogg-Briand Pact. Butler shared the Peace Prize in 1931 with Jane Addams.
