Inscription. Powered by an undershot water wheel, 10 feet in diameter, the sandcasted Anchony-Chaffery Hammer was used to convert blooms into anchonies and finished wrought iron mercantile bars. The hammer weighing approximately 500 pounds, was raised about two feet by wipers attached to the water wheel shaft. This pressed the hammer against a wooden beam which acted as a spring, increasing the force of the hammer as it snapped down on the anvil. All of the refinery hammers used at Maramec were purchased from eastern iron manufacturers.
