This building was designed and built by Ulfert Ruhaak at a cost of $8000. It was a vaudeville theater, American Nickelodean, which had an Air Dome for summer use. In 1921, this became the American Theatre. In later years this was also a church, restaurant, candy store, liquor store, and grocery. The current proprietors, the Hromadka family, celebrated 100 years in business in St. Louis in 2012. Note the rare black Fleur-de-lis on the south side.

Regarding Vincent's Market. Vincent Hromadka started his own meat market in 1912, hoping to cater to St. Louis' newfound Bohemian population - most of which settled in Frenchtown (now Soulard). It originally opened at the corner of present-day 11th and Emmet Streets. The store had relocated several times before moving to its current location in 1986, which by then was run by Hromadka's grandson, Vincent III.
