Preachers' Aid Society
The Preachers' Aid Society was established in 1869 at the first meeting of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The society was formed to provide support to needy ministers, their wives, widows and children. Among its initial actions, the society purchased the stock of the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and moved the institution forward under its stewardship for over one hundred years. The ownership of the seminary's successor institution, Lycoming College, was transferred by the society to an independent board of trustees in 1970. The college continues to aid students studying for the ministry and to award special scholarships to United Methodist students from the church conference.
