Inscription. This site has been a part of Clinton's educational system since Union High School opened here January 1, 1860. The three-story facility was con- structured of brick garnered from the village brickyard. Boys entered Union High School through an entrance at the base of a tower on the north side of the building, while girls entered each morning through a doorway on the south side of the school, Union High School met the educational needs of the community until 1905, when it was condemned and torn down.

In March of 1905 Clinton voters approved the purchase of up to $15,000 in bonds to build and equip Clinton High School. These sandstone tablets, commemorating the year the school was built, were located above the front door. This two-story brick structure housed grades chart (kindergarten) through eight on the first floor, and grades nine through twelve on the second floor. An assembly room where students met at the beginning of each day to sing "The Star Spangled Banner” was located on the second floor. The superintendent's office was located in a mezzanine across the front of the school between the two floors.

Clinton High School served local students continuously from 1906 until 1971, with additions being made to the original structure in 1926 and 1958. Although both additions remain intact and today house
