Douglas L. Williams, a Zachary, Louisiana native, is best known for his MVP performance in Super Bowl XXII while playing for the Washington Redskins against the Denver Broncos. He was the first African American quarterback to win the Super Bowl. He was named AP All-American and finished 4th in the Heisman Trophy voting. Williams is a two-time Black College Player of the Year. Doug Williams became the 7th head football coach at GSU in 1998, succeeding the legendary Eddie Robinson. He led the Tigers to three straight SWAC Conference titles.
