Kalispell in Flathead County, Montana — The American West (Mountains)
Iseminger/Graham House
East Side Historic District
An interest in colonial American architecture began with the Philadelphia Centennial in 1877 and inspired the Colonial Revival style. When new printing methods in the late 1890s made photographs in periodicals widely available, the style spread across the nation. This home, built between 1903 and 1909, is representative of the architectural revival. A porch spanning the front, Tuscan columns, narrow clapboard siding, and strict overall symmetry define the style, which draws upon classical lines and simple details. Halbert and Marilla Iseminger moved to Kalispell from their rural farm and purchased this property in 1908. Halbert Iseminger Jr. was in residence by 1909. The senior Isemingers were the proprietors of the Mens Fashion Shop where Halbert Jr. and some of their seven children were also employed. Various family members resided at this address until 1923. World War I Navy veteran John Graham and his bride, Elsie, then bought the property. Graham owned a local furniture and appliance business. The couple raised their son here and after Elsies death in 1955, Graham remained in the home until 1967.
