Order of the Purple Heart
Purple Heart Memorial
Established by George Washington and first designated as The Badge of Military Merit, the Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity, after 4-5-1917, has been wounded or killed.
The Purple Heart differs from all other decorations awarded to Armed Forces personnel, in that an individual is not recommended for the Purple Heart decoration, but rather he or she is entitled to it upon meeting the specific criteria.
