The Chase and Mulholland Store and the Morning Star Mine Office stood on the foundations in front of you. George Chase was the company's first manager, and C. A. Mulholland was the store's manager. Chase built the store as a commissary. All purchases that company miners made in the store were deducted from their paychecks. The convenience of such credit, undoubtedly, left some miners beholden to the company.

Chase worked in the company office. Company meetings, payroll preparations, ore assays, and the weighing of ore wagons were all conducted here. With 83 men on the payroll in 1915, the mine office was essential to keeping the company afloat.

For the longest time it was the only store [in] Rush. Mr. Mulholland's was the first general store…[there was] a side room where they sold their dry goods, and the other part was a grocery store. Helen Lack, Rush resident
