1. St. Joseph Hospital Marker
Inscription. In 1891, when St. Joseph Hospital was built on this site, above the doorway of the main entrance was a stone with the letters "SJ" carved in it. This stone remained here through many hospital expansions. However, in 1966, the front porch where the stone was located had to be removed to allow for the footings to support the C-Wing. As the last visible tie to the original structure, the seal is placed in the D-Wing, which was the final addition completed in this early expansion project. This seal is prominently displayed as a reminder of the rich history SSM St. Joseph Health Center has in caring for the residents of the St. Charles community.

Note that a seal similar to the subject of the marker is visible here above the (older) hospital entrance, but the resolution of the postcard is too poor to confirm that it is or is not the one and the same.
