Inscription. The beautiful Queen Anne cottage Solterra burned to the ground in 1914. The only thing remaining as the sun set on March 9, 1914, was a brick chimney and a small outbuilding — the Dovecote.

The Dovecote became a multipurpose building after the site was sold to the Crane family. It would be moved all over the island by the Club and the Jekyll Island Authority. The Dovecote was once placed next to the beach and refreshments were sold to the island guests.

Now it has a permanent home near its original site.

Traditional Dovecotes

See, to the whitewashed cot what doves have flown!
While, that unwhitewashed, not a bird will own.

—Ovid. Tris.

Pigeon farming was popular in the early Roman culture. Romans likely brought the dovecote, or columbarium, to the countryside of France and the UK during the Roman period. Found on larger manors and estates, the dovecote was a status symbol. The pigeons also provided food for a household.

The dovecote fell out of fashion during the late 1700s and early 1800s. A resurgence in popularity occurred in the mid-1800s, as they begin to appear on estates of the wealthy in the United States, France and the UK.
