Inscription. Established c 1895, Freemount Junior High School was an important black school in the Eufaula area. It was originally established within the Freemount AME Church which once stood about 300 feet south of this site. The school was later moved to this location on December 18, 1934 after four acres of land were acquired. In 1967 a Gymnasium, with attached classrooms, was added on the east side of County Road 36 at the junction of Alabama Highway 131. The school closed in 1969 due to integration of public schools in Barbour County. Freemount AME Church is now situated on the property once occupied by the school.
