Havre de Grace in Harford County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Keeper's House
Havre de Grace resident John Donahoo constructed the lighthouse Keeper's House with attached kitchen, as well as the lighthouse in 1827. It was originally a one and half story structure measuring 34 by 20 feet with two rooms and an attached kitchen. The half-story above had 2 sleeping chambers. The basement walls are 20 inches thick. The contract also specified a stone privy and a well. Today, the original structure's shape is outlined in the north wall.
In 1884, the Keeper's House underwent an expansion. By 1890, a summer kitchen was added to the west side of the house. Below is an excerpt from the 1884 Annual Report of the Light-House Board to the Secretary of the Treasury.
