Inscription. The Lehigh & Hudson River Railroad was the smallest of the anthracite coal railroads that proliferated the Northeast. In 1886, the L&HR built a passenger station at this site. A freight house was added in 1906 to service the busy farmers and is now a National and State Historic Landmark. There was also a creamery here that contributed the line's extensive dairy trade into New York. The passenger station was sold in 1934, but the freight depot continued service through the 1960's. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's private train parked at this location in September 1944 while he visited his friend widow Lucy Mercer Rutherford at her home, Rutherford Hall, located along the shore of Allamuchy Pond. The railroad right-of-way from Andover to Phillipsburg, NJ has been preserved for a future Rails-to-Trail through beautiful Warren Country.
