1. Spanish-American War Marker
Inscription. The Spanish-American War was a conflict fought between the United States and Spain. Mounting tensions between the two powers during the "Age of Imperialism” peaked with the sinking of the USS Maine, the event that triggered the United States' declaration of war on April 25, 1898. The U.S. achieved sweeping naval victories in the Pacific and Caribbean Theaters, bringing the war to a quick end. The ensuing treaty of Paris allowed the United States to purchase control of former Spanish colonies, including the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico, and solidified the worldview of the U. S. as an emerging global power.

Erected by Spencerville FFA.
