1. Korean War Marker
Inscription. The Japanese had occupied the Korean peninsula since 1910. After Japan's defeat in WW II, the Korean peninsula was divided into North Korea and South Korea. On June 25, 1950, communist North Korean forces invaded South Korea. In order to stop North Korea's military aggression, the United States joined the fighting under the banner of the United Nations. In October of 1950, communist China unofficially joined the war on the North Korean side. A cease-fire agreement was signed on July 27, 1953. The armistice ended the fighting, but Korea remains divided today.
